What is periodised nutrition?

August 22, 2017

A baseball player doesn’t go out and hit 50 balls everyday and then go home, repeat forever. They mix up their training type, load, intensity, focus, duration, at strategically placed times of the season/off season. In turn, many aspects of their game and their body improve. This is periodised training.

We should approach nutrition in a similar way. If every day training is different, we should expect that the fuel required to support and recover from that training differs daily too. We can’t just eat the same way everyday and expect this to be appropriate for whatever training we happen to be doing or not doing that day.

Periodised nutrition means changing the nutrition input based on what you are trying to support and/or achieve on a daily, weekly, monthly or annual basis.

Nutrition that is designed to maximise the return on training is an important endeavour for any athlete.
