Tasti Wholefood Balls - product review
Per serve (30g or 3 balls), Tasti Fruit + Vege wholefood balls contain:
– 119 calories
– 1.2g protein
– 3.9g fat (1.9g saturated fat)
– 19.6g carbohydrate (12.7g sugar from fruit)
– 6mg sodium
– 1.2g dietary fibre
– 0mg gluten (gluten free)
(please note I analysed the mango and carrot flavour)
Versions:
– Banana and Spinach
– Mango and Carrot
– Strawberry and Beetroot
Ingredients:
Apple puree concentrate, sunflower seed butter, coconut, dried carrot and freeze dried mango.
Energy (calories):
At 119 calories per serve, this is quite similar to a large piece of fruit such as a large banana.
Protein:
Given the main ingredient of the balls is fruit, this is not a high protein food.
Fats:
With sunflower seed butter and coconut as ingredients, there is 3.9g of fat per serve. It is quite high in saturated fat (6.4g per 100g) which would be owing to the coconut content.
Carbohydrate:
19.6g of carbohydrate per serve is again similar to a large piece of fruit.
Sugar:
There is no added sugar, therefore the sugar content of 12.7g per serve is coming from the apple, carrot and mango.
Sodium:
This product is low in sodium with 22mg per 100mg.
Made in?
Made in New Zealand
Taste:
To me, this version tastes mostly like mango (which I love). The texture is very soft, with a slight chew factor. Overall I like it.
Health Star Rating:
Tasti wholefood balls do not participate in the Health Star Rating program.
To read more about the Health Star Rating, see my article here.
Price:
$3.85 AUD per pack (containing 2 serves). I have not seen the sale price.
There are no larger pack options.
Packaging:
The packet cannot be recycled.
Summary:
Tasti wholefood balls are a convenient snack option between meals, though fresh fruit would suffice in its place and would be more filling. One to two serves of these would make for a good pre-training snack for athletes given their great carbohydrate content, small volume and convenience.
Overall, a nice nutritious pick for an athlete that is looking for another snack idea to top up carbohydrate intake before training. For the general population, this tends to be a pricier option (and less satiating) than just having a good ole piece of delicious fresh fruit.
