Food Intelligence
Food Intelligence was an extremely enjoyable read. If you've ever wondered why The Biggest Loser contestants did not have long term success with their weight loss (or why most people don't for that matter).
Paleofantasy
The paleo diet is just another commercial diet that over promises and under delivers.
Food Politics
Oh what a read this is! In my opinion, you should read everything by Marion Nestle – a professor at New York University. Food is BIG business. If you've ever wondered how the food industry influences what you eat... pick up this book and read it!
Soda Politics
Another from Marion Nestle – a book about advocacy for reducing soda consumption. BIG soda – just as interesting to understand as BIG food.
Burn
'Energy is the currency of life; without it; you're dead.' Herman Pontzer argues that our bodies don't work like simple fuel-burning machines. He proposes a view of metabolism called 'constrained daily energy expenditure', where our brains manipulate both hunger and metabolic rate in ways that make it awfully hard to maintain weight loss.
The Athlete's Gut
An extremely well-researched and well put together book! The author Patrick Wilson is a registered dietitian (USA) and assistant professor of exercise science. He is also extremely funny which makes this science book of 262 pages ever so easy to read. For more personalised advice and management, it's best to visit an accredited sports dietitian.
Gut
'Gut' is packed full of funny illustrations (by Jill Enders) as well as humour. It is easy to read and I never found myself thinking the content was boring or dry. If you have ever been confused by the terms 'microbiome', 'probiotics', 'gut flora' and 'enteric nervous system' then this book is 100% for you!
Caffeine for Sports Performance
A book for both the lay person and the sports performance dietitian. When you see authors Burke, Desbrow and Spriet together, you know it's going to be an incredible read. Covers everything you could hope to know about caffeine – its history, pros and cons, how to use it effectively in sport and the safety/risk aspects. Cannot recommend highly enough.
No Period, Now What?
If you have lost your period and been diagnosed with Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport or Hypothalamic Amenorrhea, the first few chapters of this book are absolute gold. It provides scientific information about what is happening in your body but also an abundance of lived experiences from those who are going through the same thing.
Sick Enough
Dr Gaudiani is a medical doctor who turned her career towards working with those with eating disorders. This is a comprehensive book on the medical complications of eating disorders, and an appeal to anyone suffering from an eating disorder to consider themselves sick enough to seek expert help, no matter the symptoms they are experiencing.
The Inside Scoop on Eating Disorder Recovery
Written by two eating disorder therapists, this book offers both an insider account of, and expert commentary on EDs. The chapters are short yet full of insight with humour sprinkled throughout. The authors avoid scientific jargon, so it lends itself as a book for anyone, most notably those who are directly struggling with food and body image.
Overcoming Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating
A self-help guide using cognitive behavioural techniques. It's a wonderful evidence-based guide setting out a step-by-step recovery programme. Much of what is recommended is how a dietitian would work alongside you: monitoring your eating, possibly implementing a meal plan and discussing ways to prevent binge eating.
The Rules of "Normal" Eating
I would consider this book the bible for anyone who has struggled with their relationship with food or their body. The author is a psychotherapist who communicates complex topics in an understandable and straightforward way. This is one of the books I have recommended most often to my clients.
Just Eat It
A book by Registered Nutritionist Laura Thomas. This is not only a book about intuitive eating but also a practical guide. I particularly appreciated the no nonsense sections on the diet cycle, interoceptive awareness, emotional eating and what can happen when we get over-hungry. It's a perfect book to read and re-read for anyone who has 'dieted'.
Supporting Autistic People with Eating Disorders
'Current treatments for Anorexia Nervosa do not meet the unique needs of people with an eating disorder and co-morbid autism spectrum disorder.' An excellent book for clinicians working in the space of eating disorders – to better understand the needs of those with neurodivergence.
The Adonis Complex
Clinical Sports Nutrition
It doesn't get any better than THIS book. The absolute gem of sports nutrition… written by our very own Aussies. If you are a sports dietitian, studying to become one, or hope to become one one day – READ THIS BOOK. There is absolutely no better book for a comprehensive understanding of ALL things sports nutrition. GET THIS BOOK!
Practical Sports Nutrition
The Complete Guide to Food for Sports Performance
A practical, 507 page book by two of the best in the business. Covers a huge range of sports including triathlon, swimming, cycling, running, AFL, rugby, soccer and more, plus broader chapters on training nutrition, competition nutrition, promoting recovery and supplements.
Eat Like an Athlete
Bad Science
One of the great frustrations I have with mainstream media reporting on nutrition science is just how simple they make everything seem. If you'd like an in-depth look at bad science, how to spot it, and how we fall short on good scientific reporting in the lay media, this book is for you!
The Body
Bryson manages to present a great deal of research AND throw humour throughout it all. If you have an interest in the body, but not an interest that extends to the extreme scientific detail of anatomy and medicine, then this is a book for you!
