What is the Heart Foundation saying?
New advice (based on a review of the evidence) has been revealed by the Heart Foundation this week.
Previously, the advice had been:
– no more than 6 eggs per week for those with high cholesterol or heart disease or Type 2 Diabetes
– no more than 7 eggs per week for everyone else
– for everyone to choose reduced fat varieties of dairy foods (specifically milk, yoghurt and cheese, does not include ice cream, flavoured milks, butter, cream)
– to limit processed and deli meats
– to limit unprocessed red meats (the ADG’s state no more than 455g per week)
The advice now stands at:
– no more than 7 eggs per week for those with high cholesterol or heart disease or Type 2 diabetes
– no restriction on eggs for healthy individuals (but dietary variety is important, don’t forget!)
– reduced fat varieties of dairy foods for those with high cholesterol or heart disease
– full-fat dairy foods are ok for healthy individuals (specifically milk, yoghurt and cheese, does not include ice cream, flavoured milks, butter, cream)
– limit processed and deli meats
– limit unprocessed red meat to no more than 350g per week
Don’t forget. Good heart health also involves:
– not smoking
– limited alcohol intake
– maintenance of a healthy weight
– at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on 5 days of the week
I hope that sums it up for you!
